Weekly Schedule WC 14/05/2012
Well Exams are now upon us. Good luck to all those in exams today and this week. Make sure you work as hard on your revision as you do on the track or in the pool!
Obviously, exams considered, training will be lighter and much of it will be uncoached. Only Tuesday’s Track Session will remain coached. However, we do suggest you try to attend these sessions or at least do something. Exercise gives you a clear mind, so please ensure it remains part of your schedule.
The schedule is up for this week, commencing 14th May 2012, on the ‘Schedule’ page.
Good Luck with exams!
Weekly Schedule WC 30/04/2012
With just 7 Days till BUCS Sprint training this week will obviously be tapering down to be race quick! Sessions marked in orange are specific race prep sessions, so for those not racing an alternative/extension for these sessions may be required.

Easter Racing Round-Up
Welcome back everyone! I would begin by saying I hope we all had a relaxing holiday but from my facebook and twitter news feed it appears DUTri has been very productive over the Easter vacation. Once again showed off its strength and depth at multiple events around the UK and abroad.
Firstly, the Duathlon AG qualifying races were rounded up with two events at Outlon and Cambridge. Both were well attended by DUTri past and present. Amazingly Holly Page, Jonney Yeates and Kat Henderson all met the criteria for AG selection, so well done to them. However, Jake Shackleford and Pete Hawkings both had promising results against tough competition.
Furthermore, with the duathlon qualifiers out the way the sprint triathlon series has started in earnest with many DUTri members racing in various Sprint events up and down the country. A round up of results is listed below (please email details of others for publication to jonathan.yeates@durham.ac.uk) :
- Ryan Hart had a great finish at the Duston Sprint coming in 15th overall (2nd in AG).
- Fiona Hunter-Johnson finished 3rd in her AG group at the Portugeuse National Sprint Champs whilst training out with DUTri sponser TTH in the Algarve.
- Pete Hawkings achieved 17th place (2nd in AG) at the first installment of the Thames Turbo series.
Adding to the success of our current athletes, both DUTri alumni Ben Howard and Matt Gunby had podium results at elite races. Matt Gunby finshed 2nd at the British Elite Duathlon Championships just 13 seconds behind eventual winner Mark Buckingham. Furthermore, Ben Howard’s 2nd place at TriStar Mallorca, after leading the bike leg, has kick started his sabbatical year in glorious fashion. We wish both athletes the best of luck over the coming year!
All that being said, DUTri currently looks in great shape also with many results to be positive about. Fingers crossed the form will carry on through and we can do business at BUCS Sprint which is under 2 weeks away.
The 2012 BUCS Sprint Championship takes place on Sunday 6th May at St Marys Sports Centre, Calne, Wilthsire. DUTri start list can be found here.
Monday 23rd April
Weekly Schedule WC 23/04/2012
Welcome back. With BUCS less than 2 weeks away training will obviously be catering towards this. Hence the two brick sessions on Wednesday and Sunday. These are valuable and are highly recommended in order to get comfortable with breathing and rythym after the bike.
The rest of the schedule is up for this week, commencing 23rd April 2012, on the ‘Schedule’ page.
Remember to work out vdot times – interval and repetition paces – ready for Tuesday.

Pain and Glory for DUTri at second Duathlon qualifier
Last weekend saw the second round of qualifiers for the Duathlon Age Group World Championships take place at Oulton Park, just outside Liverpool. DUTri were once again out in force in the scorching temperatures with Pete Hawkings, Jake Shackleford and Holly Page all in action. The standard distance race (8.6km run, 38km bike and 4.3km run) was taking place on the Oulton Race circuit. The smooth tarmac, lapped course and the warm spring weather usually results in some super quick times and DUTri did not disappoint.
Holly Page had an impressive all round performance, finishing 1st in her Age Group, meaning she will represent Great Britain in September. She ran the first 8.6km in 34.02, one of the quickest female times of the day. She carried this form onto the bike and was looking to post another impressive split. However, the 9-lap course and the confusion created by its monotony led Holly to completing an extra lap and dropping a valuable 7 or so minutes. However, realising her error and visibly determined to make amends Holly ran exceptionally for her final run posting an impressive 00:16:48, the 5th quickest female split of the day. She finished in a commendable 02:04:29 which put her up amongst some of the strongest females overall.
Jake and Pete also went extremely well in the men’s field. Pete was going very strong after the first run, completing two laps in 00:31:48 (46th overall) and Jake just a minute after him, with a time of 00:32:45 (67thoverall). The track setting and lapped route led to some extremely fast biking with Jake showing that his time with the Cycling Club was paying dividends as he caught back up with Pete on the 3rd lap and posted a 01:02:13 split for the 38km. However, Pete regained his position as the lead Durham athlete heading into T2 with a slightly slower 01:03:25 overall.
With Age Group qualification at stake, both put everything into the final run. Jake ran another strong split going round in 00:16:51 and finishing as the top Durham athlete with an impressive 01:53:52. Unfortunately, Pete had overcooked – literally – in the summer like heat and retching all the way round, he dropped vital minutes on the second run which is usually his strength. He finished the final run in 19 minutes and 01:55:33 overall. Sadly, the extremely strong competition seen at the Dambuster had continued and despite their best efforts the boys finished 7th and 10th respectively, outside qualification. However, both can be pleased with their efforts, which will act as a firm building block for BUCs Sprint and the summer’s racing calendar.
Also racing was DUTri alumni Kat Henderson who finished second in her Age Group 25-29 and will join Holly in Nancy in September.
Full results available online: http://www.xtramileevents.com/results
The third and final qualifier will take place Sunday 15th April in Cambridge, where DUTri’s sole representative Jonney Yeates will be racing. We wish him all the best.
More BUCS points for DUTri at Modern Biathlon
Last Saturday also saw the BUCS Modern Biathlon Championships held at the Oxford University Sports Centre.
Although a much shorter and quicker format than Triathlon; DUTri added to Team Durham’s continuing good form with our Women finishing 4th in their Team competition and the Men 6th.
Modern Biathlon consists of two separate events held over the course of a day. First our athletes tackled a 200m swim TT followed by a 1500m run TT later in the day.
Aimee Backhouse was Durham best performer finishing 9th in the Women’s competition with 2104 points. This was just over 200 points behind the overall winner. She swam a 2.28min 200m and ran the 1500m in 5.16min.
Positives can also be drawn from the strong individual performances in the single events. As we build towards 2012 BUCS Sprint our athletes are showing the effects of some good Winter Training and proved that the 1 hour of travelling for every 1 minute of racing was worth it.
DUTri’s athletes results and positions are published below:
Harry Eaton – 26th Swim – 2.49min, 21st Run – 4.55min, Overall – 29th
Tim Wiles – 27th Swim – 2.50min, 6th Run – 4.21min, Overall – 20th
David O’Farrell – 17th Swim – 2.28min, 24th Run – 4.57min, Overall 19th
Fiona Hunter-Johnston - 27th Swim – 2.55min, 5th Run – 4.58min, Overall – 20th
Aimee Backhouse - 11th Swim – 2.28min, 15th Run – 5.16min, Overall 9th
Hannah Molloy - 18th Swim – 2.39min, 22nd Run – 5.35min, Overall – 21st
Rebecca Farrell - 21st Swim – 2.43min, 12th Run – 5.12min, Overall – 19th

Promising Performances for DUTri at British Duathlon Championships.
Last weekend saw the inaugural event in the 2012 British Age-Group Championships as 800 competitors descended on Rutland Water for the inaugural Dambuster Duathlon.
DUTri’s own Performance Team Captain Pete Hawkings and Jonney Yeates took part, both hoping to earn a coveted spot in the Great Britain Age-Group Team for World Championships in September. A brisk 10km run, followed by an undulating 42km ride, rounded off by another flat 5km awaited our athletes.
Pete and Jonney were off in the first Men’s wave at 8.20am. Both enjoyed strong runs to Normanton Church and back with Pete entering T1 in 00:35:45, closely followed by Jonney in 00:36.34. However, the calibre of the competition was obvious straight away as despite these impressive times they lay in 62nd and 84th overall entering T1. The famous Rutland Ripple was next and Pete enjoyed a strong ride of 01:13:32. Losing a chain cost Jonney a minute but he came back in a respectable 01:15:15.
The flat 5km dash to Normanton was the final leg of the arduous course and both Pete and Jonney showed that their track sessions together had put them weirdly in tune as they recorded exactly the same splits of 00:18.13mins. In the end, Pete finished in 2:08:53 and Jonney in 02:11:29, finishing 87th (11th in Age-Group) and 118th (15th in Age-Group) respectively. Despite strong performances, a tough and extremely competitive field meant both had not qualified.
However, the event was the first of three qualifiers for the Great Britain Age-Group Team for the 2012 Nancy ITU Duathlon World Championships. The second opportunity to qualify will be at the Oulton Park Duathlon, near Liverpool, next Saturday, 25th March. Pete will make another attempt there, this time joined by fellow Performance Team member Jake Shackleford and Holly Page who also hope to qualify. The final qualifier takes place on Sunday 15th April at the Cambridge Duathlon where Jonney Yeates will represent DUTri again. We wish all our athletes the best of luck!

Solid Performances at Durham City Club Duathlon
Durham City Club Duathlon
A cold yet gorgeously sunny day set the scene for a great morning’s racing at High Shincliffe yesterday. Although the headwind along the exposed bike route combined with the cold weather lead to some slower than normal times, there were some strong performances on show from DUTri’s members, both old and new.
Firstly, the performance squad showed it wanted to continue its success from last year as James Wildgoose and Peter Hawkings finished 1 and 2 overall. They demonstrated both their proficiency on the bike, posting times over 3 minutes quicker than the rest of the field, and consistency in their run splits, with only a few seconds difference on each leg. However, in the end James Wildgoose narrowly edged it, with only 15 seconds separating the teammates.
Further, congratulations must go to Jonney Yeates, Ryan Hart and Holly Page who finished 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively. Ryan was unlucky not to go under the hour, with the traffic light at the bottom of Shincliffe Hill causing a delay. However, another impressive performance by Holly Page saw her finish as the top female athlete, in a solid time of 1:01.24.
However, DUTri’s success owes much to the breadth and number of athletes out racing. Overall, DUTri comprised over half the field. For some this was even their first Duathlon, and considering the cold weather some extremely respectable and promising times were posted. Even more encouraging was the overheard comment “Bring on March”. Neither can we.
Next and final instalment in the Winter Series – Sunday, March 18th.

DUTri continues medal haul at BUCS Duathlon
DUTri enjoyed a fantastic set of results this weekend at the BUCS Duathlon Championship, at Castle Coombe race track in Wiltshire.
Having aimed for a Girls Team 3rd and Boys Team 4th, we smashed our targets to scoop Girls Team 2nd and Boys Team 3rd. That has meant DUTri has one Gold, Silver and Bronze medals before Christmas, a fantastic start to the year.
The girls performed brilliantly with Jenny Douglas, Holly Page and Fiona Hunter-Johnson medalling for the girls; coming 4th, 5th and 12th respectively. The boys faired similarly well against a tough field, with Dan Jenkin coming an impressive 6th, Pete Hawkings 29th and Ben Page 30th. But congratulations must be extended to all the other DUTri members who travelled down, everyone plays a part in these races, by performing well, they push others racing further down the results page.
Photos from the event will be uploaded soon.

BUCS Gold for DUTri at Hill Climb
DUTri’s own Fiona Hunter-Johnson (pictured above right) helped Durham University onto a Women’s team Gold at BUCS Hill Climb on Saturday at Curbar Gap. Individually she finished 6th in an impressive time of 8:08, but her and her teammates consistency ensured Durham the win, fighting off strong competition from Leeds Met and Loughborough who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Lets hope she and DUTri can carry this form into BUCS Duathlon in just over 2 weeks time.
